Read on for some Facts About Stress so you can manage it.
Fact #1: Your body doesn’t discriminate between a big stress or a little stress.
The human body doesn’t know the difference between a BIG stress or a little one. Regardless of the significance, stress affects the body in studied ways. A stress reaction, which most of us experience each day, begins with a cascade of over 1,000 biochemical events in your body. If these reactions are left unchecked we age prematurely, cognitive function is impaired, energy is drained, and we are robbed of our effectiveness and clarity.

Fact #2: Stress can make smart people do ‘stupid’ things.
Stress causes what researchers call “cortical inhibition.†This phenomenon of cortical inhibition helps to explain why smart people do stupid things. Stress inhibits part of our thinking brain and we can’t function at our best. However, research shows we can learn how to shift our stress response to create “cortical facilitation†– where we are sharp, calm, and feel and think with enhanced clarity. It’s called shifting into “coherence†where our brain, heart and nervous system work in harmony. This physiological state of coherence facilitates optimal mental, emotional and physical performance.
Fact #3: People can become numb and not notice their stress.
We can be experiencing stress at a physiological level, yet mentally we think we’re fine because we’re used to it. Many of us have become so adapted to daily pressures, irritations and annoyances of life that it starts to seem ‘normal’. But the small stresses accumulate quickly, and we may not realize how much they’re impairing ourselves until it shows up as an overreaction or poor decision that we later regret. Its similar to a bad smell in the room, if you have been experiencing it for years its is far less noticeable (p.s. this is the same for pain too!)
Fact #4: You have more control over your emotional stress reactions than you think.
You don’t need to be victims of our own emotions, thoughts and attitudes. You can become more conscious of how stressful situations are affecting you before they take a toll, mentally or physically. Simple solutions can empower you to take charge of stress overload and even rewire your reactions.
Fact #5: An effective strategy is to handle stress when it happens.
One of the most important facts about stress is how to deal with it best. The best way to stop stress accumulation is to deal with it when you feel it arise. You can’t always do that with big stressors, but you can shift most reactions that you experience throughout a day. Millions of people try the binge-and-purge approach when it comes to releasing stress. They stress out daily, believing that they can wait until later to recover. They may go to a yoga class, gym, or wait until the weekend to chill out. Unfortunately, your health and life satisfaction suffer when you put off releasing your stress accumulation.
