Are Migraine Aura Common?

When talking about migraines there are primarily 2 different types: migraine aura and migraines without aura. What is aura? Read on to find out more.

Migraines are a recurring, throbbing type of headache. They are generally more severe than other forms of headaches, such as tension headaches or cervicogenic headaches. These are usually only on one side of the head and are less common than general headaches, with estimates of 13% of adults suffering from them and some becoming chronic problems. Medical researchers used to believe that the cause was due to blood flow issues (such as high blood pressure) in the head causing the symptoms, resulting in them prescribing medication to treat migraines by effecting the blood vessels and reducing the pain signals, in attempt to produce a migraine cure. However, newer research has proven that migraines are neurological, originating from the brain stem, located at the top of the neck.

Looking back this is also more logical given the accompanying symptoms, such as nausea, impaired vision or hearing, balance issues, sensitivity to light or sound and sensory disturbances in the arms, such as tingling, numbness weakness or pain. These are symptoms that typically aren’t associated with vascular (blood vessel) diseases.

This also makes more sense when considering the triggers, such as light, sound, coffee, red wine, sugar or stress. Typically for vascular problems the effects aren’t so instant and these common triggers wouldn’t produce any negative changes.

Migraines with aura refers to a specific type of migraine where the sufferer experiences a sensory disturbance. This aura can start before a full blown migraine and give them the feeling of a warning that it is about to happen. This aura can include seeing flashes of light, blind spots, tingling or weakness in the hand, face or arm and difficulty speaking. There may also be other visual disturbances, such as seeing stars or zigzag lines. These types of migraines may then lead to the throbbing headache. Migraines without aura are what most classically think of as migraines, the head pain, throbbing sensation, sensitivity to light and overall debilitating incapacitation that can result in someone being unable to engage in normal activities, potentially for days on end. Read more about them, here.
