Do you often forget simple things or struggle to focus? This fuzzy or unclear thinking is called brain fog. It is not a medical condition, but it can affect your daily life. In this blog, we will discuss what brain fog is, its causes, and how chiropractic care in Singapore helps. So let’s begin, shall we?
What is Brain Fog?
Brain fog is a common term used to describe the symptoms of cognitive impairment. It is not a medical condition on its own, but rather a symptom of several disorders. Just as its name suggests, it clouds your mind and impairs your ability to think clearly and process information.
This, in turn, can interfere with your daily life tasks, such as paying attention to the conversation, recalling information, and making decisions. Brain fog can affect anyone at any age. It may be a temporary experience or a persistent issue.
Brain Fog Symptoms
The symptoms of brain fog vary from person to person. Here are some common symptoms that you may experience:
- Forgetfulness
- Mental Fatigue
- Tiredness
- Difficulty staying alert
- Confusion
- Slow thought process and reaction time
- Difficulty articulating thoughts
- Trouble finding words
What Causes Brain Fog?
Brain fog can stem from various factors that include:
Lack Of Sleep
When your brain doesn’t get enough time to recharge, it struggles with focus and mental clarity. Research shows that a lack of proper sleep can affect the function of your brain cells.
Stress And Anxiety
Chronic stress and anxiety can weaken your body and cause mental fatigue. As a result, your brain gets exhausted, and it becomes difficult to concentrate and think clearly.
Poor Diet
Your diet plays a huge role in how well your body and brain work. One study published that a lack of vitamin B12 can affect your cognitive abilities and cause brain fog.
Further, certain food allergies can trigger brain fog, such as peanut and dairy products. Identifying and removing these triggers can help you avoid mental sluggishness.
Hormonal Imbalance
Changes in your hormones can affect your mood. Research shows that hormonal changes, such as an increase in progesterone during pregnancy, can affect your memory and cause short-term cognitive impairment.
In the same way, a drop in estrogen levels during menopause can affect your concentration and cause forgetfulness.
Dehydration
Hydration is essential for your body’s optimal function. Even mild dehydration can affect your brain’s ability to think clearly and process information.
Medications
Your forgetfulness might be a result of the medications you are using regularly. Brain fog is a well-known side effect of some medicines, such as painkillers.
Sedentary Lifestyle
Lack of physical activity reduces blood flow to your brain, which can bring about brain fog.
Medical Conditions
Medical conditions that cause inflammation or changes in blood sugar levels can cause brain fog. These conditions may include chronic fatigue syndrome (persistent fatigue for a prolonged time) and fibromyalgia.
Other conditions that may cause mental fatigue include:
- Anemia
- Diabetes
- Migraine
- Depression
- Covid-19
- Multiple Sclerosis
Diagnosis
Diagnosing brain fog is not just about running a single test or scan. It indicates an underlying health issue, so your doctor will conduct your physical examination and ask about your mental health and any recent changes in your routine.
Your physician might ask if you are taking any supplements or medicines you. He will also ask about any other symptoms you may have. He will order a blood test to figure out the cause of brain fog, such as inflammatory diseases, irregular blood glucose levels, nutritional deficiencies, and infections.
Furthermore, he may order some scans based on your blood work results, such as an MRI and a CT scan. He might also want to conduct a sleep study if he suspects sleep disturbance is causing the symptoms.
Brain Fog Treatment
It’s not a one-size-fits-all rule; the treatment of brain fog depends on the underlying causes. For example, if you have anemia, your doctor would recommend medicines to increase the production of RBCs.
Sometimes, treating brain fog is a matter of optimizing your medication. Your healthcare provider will adjust the dose or prescribe an alternative if they suspect that your medicines are causing the brain fog symptoms.
Further, you can try the following strategies to relieve brain fog at home.
Prioritize Quality Sleep
Establish a proper sleep routine. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night to help recharge your brain fully.
Manage Stress
Incorporate stress-reducing exercises, like yoga and meditation, to help relax your mind and improve focus.
Eat a Balanced, nutritious Diet
Focus on food rich in vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and antioxidants—foods like leaf vegetables, nuts, and fresh food support healthy brain function. Additionally, staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining a sharp mind.
Engage in Regular Physical Activity
Regular physical activity helps increase blood flow to the brain and provides nutrients to the neurons. This helps increase mental clarity and focus.
Limit Alcohol and Caffeine Consumption
Excessive alcohol and caffeine intake can disturb sleep patterns and impair your memory and cognitive performance. Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol supports better sleep and improved focus.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help People with Brain Fog In Singapore?
Chiropractic care not only helps people with neck and back pain, but it also improves mental clarity. One study found that people who received chiropractic care experienced a 20% increase in their brain function after one session as compared to the control group.
Chiropractic care is focused on the optimization of the musculoskeletal system, especially in the upper cervical spine. It can help with brain fog in the following ways:
1. Improves Nervous System Communication:
Misalignments within the spine (subluxation) can pinch off nearby nerves and disturb the communication between the brain and your body. Chiropractic adjustments restore the proper alignment of the spine, which relieves pressure on the nerves and improves nerve signaling. And when your brain and body are in sync, you can process your thoughts, retain more information, and make better decisions.
2. Increases Blood Flow to the Brain
Spinal misalignment can restrict blood flow and oxygen to the brain. This, in turn, deprives brain cells of important nutrients and oxygen and leads to brain fog and mental haze. Chiropractic adjustments improve alignment of the spine, which improves blood flow to your brain. This helps deliver more nutrients and oxygen to the brain, thus boosting mental clarity.
3. Reduces Inflammation
Chronic inflammation in the body can cause brain fog by disturbing the normal function of your brain. It releases a chemical known as cytokines, which interferes with the communication between brain cells. This impairs your cognitive process, such as memory and focus. Spinal alignment helps decrease inflammation by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. This helps your brain work with less interference and improved mental clarity.
4. Promotes Neuroplasticity
Spinal adjustments can positively influence neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to form new neural connections. This can help combat brain fog symptoms, such as memory issues.
5. Improves Autonomic Nervous System Balance
Chiropractic care improves the balance of the autonomic nervous system by decreasing sympathetic activity (stress state) and activating parasympathetic activity (relaxed state). This naturally helps relax your body and mind, improves your mood, and mental alertness.

FAQS
Chiropractors are trained doctors of Chiropractic. They train exclusively as doctors of Chiropractic, not as medical doctors or dentists.
This is the same as how a Dentist, TCM or PhD graduate are trained as doctors in their field, but are also not medical doctors.
If you have any previous scans, x-rays, MRI’s or other imaging, please bring them to your appointment. We would also recommend bringing a family member or friend if you need support or to discuss finances.
Your initial Consultation will take approximately 1 hour, your Results will take approximately 45 minutes and follow up Appointments will take 20-35 minutes depending on your case.
After Chiropractic adjustments there can occasionally be side effects. The most common feelings after corrections (especially in the beginning) are:
- No changes yet
- Some stiffness in the muscles or light soreness
- Feeling relief
If there are any other symptoms or sensations experienced, please ensure to consult with your Chiropractor.
Absolutely! If you book using our online system you should get an email immediately then a WhatsApp confirmation from our staff.
For follow up appointments you should receive an email 48 hours before your appointment. If you do not, and you would like reminders, please let us know and we will be able to help. If you receive reminders but do not want to, you can also opt out of these emeails.
On any day you receive an adjustment we would advise taking it easy and drinking plenty of water. Give it at least 2 hours before exercising. If you feel tired then listen to your body and get to sleep early. Upon starting care, we will share a guide for you to take home, with a long list of do’s and don’ts, so you can take an active part in your care.
We recommend wearing something comfortable that you can bend in. While you don’t need to wear gym clothes, clothes which you can move in freely will be helpful for any tests or techniques the doctor will need to perform. For women, if you are wearing a dress or skirt we will provide blankets to cover you.
Chiropractic, and any health approach, will not be the answer for every patient and every health concern. Other Chiropractors may use different techniques and methods which may not produce the same results as Upper Cervical Chiropractic.
Our Chiropractors conduct a thorough history, physical assessment, nerve scans and biomechanical x-rays to determine if this is a case they can help.
If we are not the right fit for you, we will do our best to find the right practitioner for you.
