Singapore Chiropractic Association: Should My Chiro Be a Member?

What is a Chiropractic association? Is this a requirement of my Chiropractor? All this and more will be answered in this article to help you make the best decisions to choose your Chiropractor for you and your family.

Why is a Chiropractic Association Important?

It is important for Chiropractors (and ALL trained professionals) to be a part of an association. This association acts as a guide for how the Chiropractor should ethically practice and also helps to regulate their choices, such as for techniques, level of training and advertising.

Medical doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, lawyers, engineers…they all are required in most countries to be a part of an association!

The association also acts as a resource for the public, where they can turn to for information, advice and guidance. The association helps to inform WHO the Chiropractor are and to ensure they are trained professionals in good standing.

For example, the Alliance of Chiropractic (AoC) in Singapore, requires all members to be trained at reputable Colleges and Universities, undertaking Masters, Doctorates or Degrees with 4 to 5 year of training! They must also maintain valid certifications with the universities and institutions that qualified them, such as ACA or GCC (which is where our Chiropractors are registered!).

What if they aren’t a Member of Chiropractic Association?

In Singapore it is currently not a requirement to be a member of an association. This means they can operate without this membership and there are no legal issues. The important thing to confirm as a patient is that the Chiropractor has:

  1. Qualified from a reputable Institution
  2. Maintains membership with a regulatory board
  3. Has valid clinic insurance

What makes members Different?

Members of association, such as AoC, will have more documented information available to the public online, such as: their specialities, what they are most proficient in helping, experience, pictures, location and even some history so you can feel comfortable seeing them.

Associations usually have more affiliation with the community and charity. In Singapore the AoC has an Outreach committee (chaired by our own DC. Shaan) which works with local charities to offer free screenings and adjustments to those unable to afford healthcare. Watch out for the events coming in 2020!

Association members have access to more information and up-to-date research which is distributed by the association, meaning the Chiropractors  can be more knowledgeable about how to help their patients.

Members of a Chiropractic Association will also have access to more seminars to improve their skills and continually enhance their professional development.

Members will also be part of a community that puts patients needs first. For example, if a case comes in needing a speciality in paediatrics (children) they will know who to refer to.

This also accounts for other Chiropractic specialities; such as Upper Cervical cases, sports injuries, posture, scoliosis, golfers, pregnant mothers or inner ear problems.

Within an association there will also be connections to other healthcare providers if a referral is needed. For example, at Vitality Chiropractic we see a lot of neck, jaw and inner ear issues, so we work with ENTs and dentists who we trust and would help colleagues refer to. Within associations there may also be connections to other professionals; such as physiotherapists, seifu therapists, doulas, yoga instructors, meditation teachers, surgeons, opticians, naturopaths, TCM etc. Click here, to learn about more Healthcare Specialists.

In summary, if a Chiropractor isn’t a member of an association it doesn’t mean they aren’t a good Chiropractor who can help your case, however members of an association may be able to add value above and beyond their their specialised training and techniques.

Since 2013, Upper Cervical Chiropractor, DC. Shaan Rai helped patients achieve greater health, relocating to Singapore in 2016 and founding Vitality Chiropractic Centres. He has an impressive track record in providing relief and solutions for people who experience nerve system problems, such as headaches, migraines, dizziness, vertigo or neurological conditions.
