How is Vertigo Diagnosed? Vertigo is like being on a rollercoaster, while on a ship that’s travelling through a rocky storm, all while your feet are still on the ground. Vertigo is a condition where patients suffer from a nauseating, spinning, disorientating sensation even when doing simple activities. Read on to find out what vertigo is and how it is diagnosed.
Vertigo is a type of dizziness that originates from the inner ear and the brainstem not working properly. Although commonly associated to heights, this is an internal body issue, but may be triggered by heights on rare occasions. It is accompanied by symptoms such as balance problems, giddiness, motion sickness, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), light headedness, hearing loss/ear fullness or headaches.
When visiting an ENT (ear nose throat doctor) they will first exclude any serious conditions, such as a growth or tumour. However, if these are not found the treatment for vertigo or dizziness is usually fairly limited. Without the need for surgery, the only other option is medication. For some patients this may temporarily reduce the symptoms, however it won’t address the underlying cause. Learn more about vertigo and dizziness here.
Further testing may reveal a specific diagnosis, such as menieres disease, vestibular disease or labyrinthitis; however the treatment will still be with medication which won’t correct the CAUSE. The focus needs to be on the brain stem and nerve system to fix the root cause to provide a real vertigo cure and long lasting results.
At Vitality Chiropractic we do specific tests to assess the brainstem and nerve system and test their functioning. If our tests show a nerve system problem, this results in a vertigo diagnosis and a case we can help with. This has allowed our patients in the past to come off their medication and severely reduces, or stop, their vertigo attacks.
