Omega 3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are known as essential fatty acids, which means the body cannot produce them itself, so must be taken in your diet. They are important parts of every cell in your body, for the membranes (or walls) of the cells. They are also in high quantities in eyes, brains and sperm cells! As well as providing structure for the body, they are also key components in your heart, immune system, respiratory system and blood vessels.
Where can I find them?
The varying types are in high quantities in different foods.
ALA is found mostly in plant oils, such as:
- Chia seeds
DHA and EPA are found in fish and other seafood, such as:
They can also be fortified into certain foods, such as eggs or yogurts.
What about supplements?
Options include fish oil, krill oil and algal oil. These options are recommended above cod liver oil which is generally less effective.
