What causes dizziness?
We all know what it means to feel dizzy. We know what it feels like to watch the room spinning around while we stand and stare helplessly about how to stop it. How about feeling you’re in motion when, in fact, you’re sitting down? It’s terrifying and debilitating, right? Life is easier and more fun when you have a healthy sense of balance.
Although dizziness isn’t a disease (it is a symptom), it can be a very dangerous condition to live with, increasing your risk of falling and preventing other activities, such as sports or driving.
WHAT CAUSES DIZZINESS?
At this point, you’re probably eager to know what causes dizziness. The following physical disorders can cause dizziness or giddiness:
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Multiple sclerosis
- Anxiety disorders
- Vertigo
- Labyrithitis
- Menieres disease
- Subluxation
- A large amount of blood loss
- Age (older people are more prone to experiencing dizziness)
- Misalignments in the upper neck
- Vestibular neuritis
- Heart failure
- Dehydration
- Anemia
- Any severe illness that affects the entire body or nerve system problem
When you have so many possible causes, it’s difficult to identify and diagnose the underlying illness responsible for the dizziness. That’s why you need to consult an expert who is experienced and specialises in caring for patients with dizziness.
GET CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Recently, a study was conducted to further the development of a line of investigation into the potential effects of Chiropractic care on cervicogenic dizziness, balance, and neck pain in adults. “Patients with symptoms of dizziness and neck pain reported improved balance and significantly less pain. Others experienced reduced dizziness and less neck pain.”

Chiropractic care is also effective in cases where the dizziness occurs as a result of damage to some joints and vertebrae, particularly at the top of the neck where the brain stem is located, along with the control centres for balance. Another study showed that subjects felt significant relief after they’d received various forms of Chiropractic care!
Chiropractic care is commonly a ‘last chance saloon’ fordizziness sufferers who have already been to their ENT, GP, neurosurgeon, TCM, physio, priest etc. This is where they finally find relief.
Other strategies that can help you to manage dizziness.
LIE OR SIT DOWN IMMEDIATELY
When you notice the onset of dizziness, don’t move. And if you aren’t already sitting down, please take a seat. Dizziness puts you at risk of falling and sustaining a life-threatening injury, whenever you feel the familiar dizzy sensation, just lie down or sit down immediately. If you can’t sit or lie down, grab a steady object, and do what you can to calm your mind while you take control of the situation.
GET MORE SLEEP AND REST
Research has shown that sleep deprivation can increase the frequency and seriousness of dizziness. If you don’t get enough quality sleep and rest, you’re more likely to feel dizzy and lightheaded often. When you sleep, your body repairs itself. In fact, one study showed that the brains clean itself during deep sleep. Sleep is therefore very important to every person’s overall health and well-being.
DRINK WATER
Dehydration is a major reason why most people feel dizzy, because your body can’t function effectively without water. So when next you feel dizzy, ask yourself this important question, “Have I drunk enough water today?” Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day.
EAT A HEALTHY DIET
If you eat healthy food, you will have the best opportunity to have a healthy body and a sound mind. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and healthy proteins has been known to help prevent dizziness. Alcohol, when taken moderately, poses no danger to you. But if you suffer from dizziness, then don’t compound the problem by taking alcohol or other substances. Always consult with your medical doctor if you suspect your medication may have dizziness as a side effect.
EXERCISE
This may sound like the hardest activity to engage in when you experience dizzy spells, but did you know that apart from improving the quality of your sleep, exercise and other related physical activities can also help to improve your sense of equilibrium and balance? Talk to your Upper Cervical Chiropractor about recommending some exercises you can try.
WHY DOES DIZZINESS HAPPEN?
Dizziness is a common problem that affects far too many people, leading to disability or psychological distress, especially in middle-aged and older adults. The thought of feeling dizzy in dangerous places like busy roads and construction sites can be scary. It is better imagined than experienced.
Although dizziness is common and is not considered serious by many, you should, however, seek help from an Upper Cervical Chiropractor in Singapore if you’re experiencing repeated episodes as it may be the result of other serious ailments. Manage dizziness now and get back to the life you love to live at reasonable fees.
