What Causes Dizziness?

What causes dizziness? We all know how it means to feel dizzy. We know what it feels like to watch the room spinning around while we stand and stare helplessly about how to stop it. How about feeling you’re in motion when, in fact, you’re sitting down? It’s terrifying and debilitating, right? Life is easier and more fun when you have a healthy sense of balance.

Although dizziness isn’t a disease (it is a symptom), it can be a very dangerous condition to live with, increasing your risk of falling and preventing other activities, such as sports or driving.

WHAT CAUSES DIZZINESS?

At this point, you’re probably eager to know what causes dizziness. The following physical disorders can cause dizziness or giddiness:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Vertigo
  • Labyrithitis
  • Menieres disease
  • Subluxation
  • A large amount of blood loss
  • Age (older people are more prone to experiencing dizziness)
  • Misalignments in the upper neck
  • Vestibular neuritis
  • Heart failure
  • Dehydration
  • Anemia
  • Any severe illness that affects the entire body or nerve system problem

If you don’t get enough quality sleep and rest, you’re more likely to feel dizzy and lightheaded often. When you sleep, your body repairs itself. In fact, one study showed that the brains clean itself during deep sleep. Sleep is therefore very important to every person’s overall health and well-being.

 

DRINK WATER

Dehydration is a major reason why most people feel dizzy, because your body can’t function effectively without water. So when next you feel dizzy, ask yourself this important question, “Have I drunk enough water today?” Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day.

EAT A HEALTHY DIET

If you eat healthy food, you will have the best opportunity to have a healthy body and a sound mind. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and healthy proteins has been known to help prevent dizziness. Alcohol, when taken moderately, poses no danger to you. But if you suffer from dizziness, then don’t compound the problem by taking alcohol or other substances. Always consult with your medical doctor if you suspect your medication may have dizziness as a side effect.

EXERCISE

This may sound like the hardest activity to engage in when you experience dizzy spells, but did you know that apart from improving the quality of your sleep, exercise and other related physical activities can also help to improve your sense of equilibrium and balance?
