What is Dizziness?

Vertigo & Dizziness

Vertigo and dizziness can be challenging. Vertigo is a symptom where sufferers experience a spinning sensation, dizziness and disorientation. Vertigo is not a medical condition itself, but rather a symptom of another problem (in the same way a sneeze is a symptom of a problem, such as the flu).

This may be associated with other symptoms, such as tinnitus, headaches, light headedness or giddiness, a feeling of fullness in the ear and even hearing loss. Commonly this is treated by medicines, such as anti-histamines or anti-emetics, which can be helpful in some cases, such as if it is due to a bacterial infection. However, if the cause is rooted in the nerve system this will only help to temporarily relieve the symptoms (learn more here). Chiropractic has been shown to have great results managing patients with vertigo and inner ear problems, especially those who have already seen medical doctors with minimal improvements.

Research shows that misalignments, in the upper neck will put pressure on the spinal cord, leading to interference in the balance centres.

Vertigo and dizziness are complex. It’s VERY important to work with someone highly trained in brain based rehabilitation.

Upper Cervical care is particularly effective at  helping dizziness as it specialises in the upper neck where the balance centres in the spinal cord are located. Patients experience less dizziness and are able to return to normal activities, such as work and playing with their children.

Are You Suffering From Any of These Problems?

Follow our 3 step guide to take control of your dizziness!

STEP 1 - Stay Safe

Seek Medical Attention

The first step with any symptoms of dizziness, vertigo or balance problems is to seek medical care. See your GP (and/or specialists), particularly if you have neevr experiecned these symptoms before, or they have recently worsened.

This is important for you to exclude any potentially dangerous pathologies, such as a growth or disease.

Ensure to tell your doctor all the details about your case, such as the symptoms you are experiencing, how they started, what makes it better or worse, any recent accidents or injuries, any medications you are taking, any other synmptoms or problems you expereience (even if you think they arent related) and all other information you can think of. The more you inform your practitioner, the better they can help you.

Trigger Avoidance

You can start to avoid triggers for your dizziness immediately. Some of these will be recommended by your dotor, some you will have realised for yourself before reading this.

Avoid driving, heavy exercise, or any other activites which may be dangerous due to your dizziness or vertigo. If you are unsure when an attack will strike, it may be best to ask a family member of friend to assist you, to avoid any further injury that may occur if you lose control due to dizziness.

The following may trigger your dizziness, they may not all be applicable, but they would be better to avoid especially in the beginning stages:

  • Salty foods
  • Alcohol
  • Stress
  • Caffeine
  • Cigarettes
  • Chocolate
  • Excessive neck movements (such as looking down at phones or have your head leaned back for a long time, like in a salon)
  • Certain medications (always discuss medicine changes with your doctor first)

Ensure to get plenty of rest, eat healthy foods and drink lots of water. When sleeping, you may find it easier to sleep in certain positions or angles. These may not be advisable for the long term, but for now they can be used while you seek further help.

STEP 2 - I saw the Doctor, but I'm still dizzy

You're Still Dizzy

If you have been to see Doctors, had medical tests, and tried different treatments (such as medications), but you still feel dizzy, now it is time to do home exercises and make lifestyle changes.

Research from CGH in Singapore, showed that up to 70% of patients with dizziness who reported to their hospital left without a clear diagnosis. Without a clear diagnosis, treatment is also not clear.

These changes should offer some temporary relief, in some cases they hopefully give long term changes, but if there is an underlying probelm then the symptoms may persist.

The following advice is not a replacement for medical care and you should still see your medical doctor before making these changes or trying these exercises and stretches.

Supplements

While it is crucial to consult healthcare professionals before introducing supplements, below are some that are more reliably supported by research that suggests they complement other healthcare approaches to help alleviate dizziness:

  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • B Vitamin (B6 and B12)
  • Magnesium
  • Gingko Biloba
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • Coenzyme Q10
Lifestyle Changes

In managing dizziness, diet reveals itself as a powerful and dynamic force capable of both triggering and alleviating symptoms. Food has the potential to either stir up a brutal tempest of imbalance or gently and reliably keep us anchored us in equilibrium. While these changes are unlikely to fix or put a stop to dizziness symptoms completely or permanently, they may help reduce their severity and disruptiveness while you are exploring effective treatments. Below are some practical adjustments with respect to nutrition that may assist you in this manner:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Reduce sodium intake
  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol
  • Identify trigger foods
  • Eat more whole foods

Proper sleep facilitates day-to-day functions in many more aspects than through just the provision of sufficient energy.

To begin with, the functioning of the inner ear, a pivotal player in balance regulation, is intimately related to the nature and quality of sleep, which, when patchy or disturbed can disrupt the operation of the inner ear’s delicate system, potentially triggering or exacerbating dizziness symptoms.

Sleep also plays a vital role in regulating blood pressure and maintaining cognitive function. The deprivation of sleep leads to a feeling of mental fog, difficulty concentrating and impaired spatial awareness—factors that certainly amplify the sensation of dizziness. The same can be said of the heightened stress, anxiety and even depression which arises due to poor sleep quality.

Finally, fatigue itself can make dizziness symptoms feel more pronounced, while conditions like sleep apnoea, characterised by disrupted breathing during sleep, can impact the body’s oxygen levels to further destabilise the body’s capacity to manage dizziness symptoms. Dehydration from lack of sleep is another known trigger for dizziness and exacerbates feelings of instability due to the altered blood volume and pressure that a lack of fluid causes.

As research into the experiences of those living with dizziness progresses, it becomes increasingly evident that mental health is closely intertwined with the experience of physical sensations and that ignoring the psychological impact of dizziness can worsen physical sensations. This is why the fear of experiencing dizziness in public spaces, or the anxiety stemming from the unpredictability of its onset, can become an important symptom to treat as a part of treating the dizziness sensation itself.

In other words, learning how to manage mental stress will certainly aid your recovery from dizziness, whether that mental stress is linked directly to the dizziness and its impact on your life, or is attributable to other causes of mental stress or anxiety in your life, including issues which may have been present before the dizziness symptoms.

Exercises and Stretches

The following are exercises and stretches more specific to dizziness symptoms. These are utilised by vestibular therapists, physiotherapists, Chiropractors and ENT’s to help.

If at ANY point an exercise or stretch makes you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, STOP. These are not ‘no pain, no gain’ movements. Instead, they aim to help improve your range of movement and train your brain to reinforce its sense of balance. You should always perform these movements within a comfortable range, and ask a loved one to assist or supervise you in order to be safe. Do not add to or embellish the exercises. Please also note that these are not a replacement for any healthcare treatment or medical testing, and you should always ask your medical Doctor or Chiropractor before starting any new exercises or movements.

Neck & Chest Stretch

The stretches are for your neck and shoulders, as well as your chest. You may be wondering, “I understand needing to stretch my neck, but what does my chest have to do with my neck and dizziness?”

It is common for people to suffer from rounded shoulders due to their use of phones and screens and the development of other modern postures. Dr Stuart McGill found that rounded shoulders lead to shortening of the chest muscles (pectoralis major and minor). This shortening not only pulls the chest and shoulders, but also pulls the neck forward. The pulling can result in Upper Crossed Syndrome.

So if you only stretch your neck and shoulders, but your chest stays tight, the chest will keep pulling the neck and shoulders out of position, while adding to the nerve problem in your neck!

  • Sit upright, shoulders relaxed.
  • Place your hand lightly over your head onto its other side to add very mild pressure and slowly lean your head to one side, bringing your ear toward your shoulder.
  • Keep your nose facing forward (do not turn your head). You should feel a gentle stretch along the side of your neck.
  • Hold the stretch for 2 minutes, breathing normally. If this is too difficult or uncomfortable, start with a shorter amount of time and gradually work your way up to 2 minutes.
  • Return your head to the centre, then repeat on the other side.

Tips:

  • Stop if you feel pain, tingling or dizziness.
  • Keep the opposite shoulder relaxed and down.

Perform the stretch 2-3 times per day.

  • Stand in a doorway (or beside a wall).
  • Place one forearm on the door frame with your elbow about shoulder height.
  • Step the same-side foot forward and gently turn your body away from that arm. You should feel a stretch across the front of your chest and shoulder.
  • Hold the stretch for 2 minutes, breathing normally. If this is too difficult or uncomfortable, start with a shorter amount of time and gradually work your way up to 2 minutes.
  • Relax, then switch sides.

Tips:

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed (do not shrug).
  • The stretch should feel gentle, not painful.

Perform 2-3 times per day.

VOR1 Exercise

This is a training exercise involving your eyes that helps your visual system and your brain function better together. If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable at any point, stop the exercise.

  • Sit upright in a comfortable position.
  • Hold your thumb up at arm’s length in front of you, or focus on a small letter on the wall ahead.
  • Keep your eyes fixed on the target (your thumb or the letter) at all times.
  • Turn your head slowly from side to side, like you are saying “no,” while keeping your eyes fixed on the target. Do not turn your head too far from side to side, only 30 degrees to either side from the centre is sufficient.
  • Move your head in this side-to-side manner for 30 seconds. If this is too difficult or uncomfortable, start with a shorter amount of time and gradually work your way up to 30 seconds.
  • Rest, then repeat.

Key points:

  • The target may blur slightly, but you should be able to keep it generally in focus.
  • Mild symptoms (slight dizziness or nausea) are normal.
  • Stop if symptoms become strong or linger too long.

Once comfortable, you can also perform it up and down, in a nodding “yes” motion.

STEP 3 - Upper Cervical Chiropractic

You've Tried Everything...

Have you have seen doctors, had tests, tried their treatments, tried the home stretches and exercises, and made lifestyle changes…but you’re still dizzy?

You may need a different approach.

If you have followed the previous steps, but dizziness persists, the next step would be for an Upper Cervical Chiropractor to analyse and check your neck.

At Vitality Chiropractic Singapore, our Chiropractors have over 10 years of experience, helping over 5,000 patients with complex problems, including dizziness, migraines, facial pain, neck pain, and other neurological problems. More than half of the patients we see every day suffer from dizziness, vertigo or other balance related problems.

Home Tests to See if You Should See an Upper Cervical Chiropractor

Before making any bookings or appointments, try the following tests to assess your neck. These tests test how your neck is functioning, affecting your cervical nerves and potentially resulting in dizziness. Follow the steps carefully in the videos, and do them with a friend of family member for safety. If any of the tests are positive, it indicates your neck may be involved, and the next logical step if assessment by an upper Cervical Chiropractor.

Home Test 1 - Posture

Try this postural assessment to find out if your neck is being affected, which can then irritate your nerves and be a contributing factor to your dizziness.

Home Test 2 - Range of Motion

Try this neck range of motion assessment to find out if your neck is being affected, which can then irritate your nerves and be a contributing factor to your dizziness.

Home Test 3 - Balance

Try this balance assessment to find out if your neck is being affected, which can then irritate your nerves and be a contributing factor to your dizziness.

Home Test 4 - Eye Movements

Try this evey assessment to find out if your neck is being affected, which can then irritate your nerves and be a contributing factor to your dizziness.

Positive Findings on Home Tests?

If any of the Home Tetss have positive findings (posture, range of motion, balance, eye movements) this can indicate a problem in your upper neck may be irritating the nerves, disrupting their normal functions, and contributing to your dizziness.

For months, I was having trouble sleeping—waking up multiple times a night and never feeling fully rested. It started to affect my mood and energy levels during the day. Since beginning care with Dr. Shaan Daniel at Vitality Chiropractic, my sleep has noticeably improved. I'm sleeping more soundly and waking up feeling like I actually got proper rest. The environment at the clinic is calming, and Dr. Shaan’s approach is both professional and reassuring. I didn’t realize how much quality sleep could impact my overall well-being until now. So thankful I found this place!

This includes testing blood pressure, balance, HRV (Heart Rate Variability), Thermography, muscle testing, Orthopaedic tests and other procedures to make sure we get the most accurate information about your condition. We also send for specialised X-rays (unique in Singapore) to make sure we are as specific as possible.
The majority of our patients take specialised x-rays (the only Chiropractic Centre in Singapore to utilise these X-rays) so we can accuratley determine the condition of your spine, produce a care plan and provide you with the most specific adjustments possible.

Your initial Consultation will take approximately 1 hour, your Results will take approximately 45 minutes and follow up Appointments will take 20-35 minutes depending on your case.

When you attend the Centre for your Results the Doctor will let you know the care plan you require and the expectations for your condition. Usually the Results will be given the next day.
