Did you know up to 70% of people experience neck pain? And the rates are only rising. For some in Singapore, neck pain is a minor problem that fades away. However, many people experience chronic and severe pain. This can be debilitating, and such chronic neck pain may not respond to medical procedures.
In some cases, people may also experience headaches, migraines, ear pain, arm pain, and sensations in the arms and hands, such as numbness and tingling.
Before resorting to medication or surgery, many opt for alternative remedies that address neck pain. Such support for neck pain usually includes massages, acupuncture, or generalised Chiropractic care in Singapore.
Have you tried all those methods yet you’re still stuck with chronic pain and neck problems? Can’t find the right neck pain clinic that works?
Let us help you Take Your Life Back with our Upper Cervical Spine Chiropractic! No need to hassle in finding the right neck pain clinic. We got you covered!
Beyond pain relief management and physical therapy, we identify the underlying causes of neck pain. This allows us to determine the most precise adjustments to make for minimal discomfort and maximum neck pain care Singapore results.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF NECK PAIN?
Neck pain refers to the pain caused by pain signals in your neck muscles, nerves and cervical spine joints. Thus, at Vitality Chiropractic in Singapore, our Chiropractic care begins with a physical examination that establishes the causes of your neck ache. Aside from the normal ageing process, common causes of neck pain include:
1. INJURIES/ACCIDENTS
Falls, sports, car crashes, whiplash…these can all damage the bones and nerves of the neck. In addition, neck injuries can have widespread effects on the rest of the body, including the organs and muscles. Damage to the neck often leads to secondary problems to the rest of the body due to nerve interference radiating via the spinal cord.

2. POOR POSTURE
This includes too much time seated, staring at computers and looking down at phones. This overstretches the nerves, then the neck muscles spasm. As a result, the shape of the neck may change over time, and it can result in degeneration of the cervical spine bones. A forward head posture and lack of natural neck curve are correlated with poor health and reduced function of some vital organs, including the heart and lungs.
3. SLEEP POSITION
Did you know that certain sleeping positions are considered poor posture? Some sleeping positions can cause neck pain. Sleeping on your front or with the head in an awkward position will cause neck stiffness and pinched nerves.
4. STRESS
Mental and emotional stress will reduce the body’s ability to heal and maintain proper health. The fight or flight response triggered by stress leads to your body reacting in tense muscles, damaging the nerves and causing neck and shoulder pain. Read more about Causes of Neck Problems here.
TYPES OF NECK PAIN
The causes of neck pain are important to be established, to ensure that the care is appropriate. Types of neck pain include:
1. MUSCLE PAIN
This can be due to overuse or spasm of the muscles, which causes neck pain. Muscle tension or muscle pain may be due to exercise, repeated habits or improper posture (such as turning to one side all day during work). In these cases the muscles get tired so feel sore.
Muscle spasms may seem more random, happening suddenly. Muscle spasm is usually the body reacting to try to protect the nerves and bones in the neck. For example, think of the last time you nearly fell over (but didn’t actually fall). Instinctively you would have tensed up your muscles to protect you. The same happens in the neck.
If your body perceives there to be a danger or possibility of injury it will cause the muscle to spasm. This can include injury to the bone, discs or nerves, if this is about to happen the muscle tenses to protect you. In this sense, the muscle spasm is actually a helpful protective mechanism, but it feels painful at the time!
2. NERVE PAIN
This is any pain or symptom due to interference or damage to the nerves. Neck pain can be due to injury to the nerve root in the neck or in other surrounding structures, such as the shoulder. This would produce referred pain.
If the nerves in the neck are damaged they can cause local pain, especially at the top of the neck (where the most important neck nerves are located at the nerve roots). There can also be referred pain from surrounding structures, such as the arm or shoulder. This is less common. The nerves all start in the brain, passing down the neck to the rest of the body including the shoulder and arm. The messages in the nerves don’t just travel in one direction, they go back and forth. Therefore an injury to the arm or shoulder may rarely send pain into the neck (though it is far more common for the neck to refer pain to the arm). This can also present as tingling, numbness or pins and needles.
In some cases the nerve pain may be referred pain from another body structure, such as an organ. If this is the case further investigation is needed to rule out more serious conditions.
3. BONE PAIN
This can be due to injury directly to the bone itself or due to pain from the facet joints. True bone pain could be due to injury, causing a bruise or potential fracture. If this is the case, it is important to seek medical attention as it could be something needing immediate attention.
The facets are the joints which connect the bones of the spine, allowing stability and movement. However, if the joints are damaged, or there is arthritis building up for years, then they may irritate the surrounding nerves producing pain. This is typically due to an improper prolonged posture, unless there has been a direct trauma.
4. WHIPLASH
Whiplash is left last on this list because it can potentially include all other types! Whiplash is a type of injury to the neck, where the neck quickly moves backward and forwards. This is common with head on collision car accidents, sports injuries or other traumas.
This can damage the nerves, joints, bones, ligaments and muscles. This can result not only in pain in the neck but damaging the nerves to the head, shoulder or arms, causing other symptoms. If a whiplash occurs an x-ray is important to rule out a serious pathology.

RELIEF FOR NECK PAIN
Some people may find that physical therapy, massage, acupuncture or general Chiropractic care improved their neck pain. However, others may be looking for a more specific and tailored approach in Singapore to identify the underlying cause of their problems. Our signature method of pain management, Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care, has outstanding success with stubborn and complicated cases of neck pain. Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic Care is a unique approach that focuses on the top bones in the neck. These bones, C1 and C2, are the foundation for the neck and protect the brainstem. Restoring normal biomechanics to the region brings balance to the nervous system and ultimately restores your health. Our neck pain specialists can perform specific neurological tests, nerve scans, and specialised biomechanical x-rays to diagnose and relieve neck pain effectively.
It is not advisable to let anyone adjust your neck unless they are a trained and licensed Chiropractor.
We help our patients take their lives back. At Vitality Chiropractic, we specialise in Upper Cervical care. We are the first to bring this technique to South East Asia and the only clinic in Singapore. Here are some common neck issues that our neck Chiropractors can help with:
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the neck
- Headaches and migraines
- Whiplash injuries
- Pinched nerves in the neck
- Cervical disc herniation or bulge
- Dizziness, vertigo and giddiness
Our unique NeuroPro method combines Upper Cervical Chiropractic, Functional Neurology, computed infrared thermography nerve scans and biomechanical x-rays to accurately diagnose the problem and provide care for your neck pain.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NECK PAIN SPECIALISTS
1. Should I go to a chiropractor for neck pain in Singapore?
Yes, you can consider consulting a Chiropractor for neck pain. Traditional medical remedies for neck pain include pain medication and muscle relaxants, but these don’t provide long-term solutions. Neck problems, especially chronic pain, can seriously impact work, relationships, and finances.
Neck pain can be debilitating and may not respond to medical treatments. For some cases, people may also experience associated headaches, migraines, shoulder pain, and sensations in the arms and hands, such as numbness and tingling.
Other approaches include Physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture and stretching. However, these approaches focus on the muscles rather than the nerves, so the pain usually returns.
In some cases, excessively relaxing the neck muscles can worsen the symptoms because the tense muscles protect the nerves. Once the protection is removed, the damage to the nerves increases. If untreated, a neck problem can worsen and cause TMJ disorder or ear pain.
Thus, to get proper neck pain relief, you need to assess the cervical spine and neck region fully. And where better to get it done than here? Vitality Chiropractic Centres is the first Upper Cervical Chiropractic Specialist in Singapore. Our Chiropractors can treat neck problems and associated symptoms, nipping your problem right at the source.
2. What are some exercises for neck pain?
Exercises for neck pain should be used for temporary relief or to support interventions from a trained practitioner. Watch the video below to learn home exercises for neck pain.
OVER 90% SUCCESS RATE!
Bear in mind that exercises for neck pain (as shown in the video below) may not necessarily ‘cure’ the neck problem. However, they can provide temporary relief. This can be helpful if you aren’t able to see a neck pain specialist.
The exercises for neck pain below are passive movements rather than stretches, which will gently improve the alignment of the neck. The alignment of the neck structures is usually the main problem. Therefore, the structure must be the main focus.
Avoid aggressive stretching of the muscles, which can make the problem worse or further exacerbate the symptoms.
3. What is text neck?
Due to our increased use of phones, tablets and other screens, we are now looking down much more. This strains the neck, forcing it to flex forward.
Prolonged time looking down will straighten the cervical spine away from its natural curve, resulting in text neck syndrome.
This text neck syndrome will put pressure on the nerves, joints, ligaments and muscles of the neck. As a result, they will be forced into an unnatural position, causing dysfunction and symptoms, such as muscle strain.
This is becoming more common in young people and can be problematic for the effect it will have on the nerves exiting the neck.
Research shows that a poor posture, with a straight ‘text neck’, increases the likelihood of visceral complications, such as breathing and heart issues.
The nerves in the neck supply information to the rest of the body after they pass from the brain. If the messages transmitted by these nerves are disrupted, it will interfere with the information that needs to pass to the organs. This can damage the brainstem and vagus nerve.
4. What causes neck pain after waking up?
Neck pain after waking up can be a common experience. Things may feel fine in the evening, but the neck is stiff and tight by the morning. This may even cause other symptoms in the jaw, shoulder, arm or fingers.
The truth is the neck pain after waking up is not due solely to one night’s sleep.
It accumulates poor sleeping position, neck injury, prolonged sitting, pinched nerve, stress, overexertion and other factors over time. It may seem sensical to blame a mattress or pillow, but your neck problems stem from a combination of factors that have degraded the health of the neck and spinal cord over time.
If you are experiencing discomfort in the neck, it is advisable to seek prompt treatment from a neck pain clinic like Vitality Chiropractic in Singapore to establish the next course of action for you.
