WHAT IS WHIPLASH INJURY?
Whiplash injury is a trauma to the neck caused by an abrupt backward or jerking motion of the head. This is most commonly caused by a car accident (such as head-on or being hit from behind) but can also be caused by any fall or accident with this similar jerking motion of the head on the neck. This leads to injury in the joints, discs, muscles, ligaments and nerves in the neck. Furthermore, it can be especially damaging to the bones at the top of the neck, called C1 and C2. When symptoms of whiplash appear after an incident, you must consult a whiplash injury specialist to assess the severity of your condition.

WHIPLASH SYMPTOMS
Symptoms following a whiplash include the following:
- Neck pain
- Headaches
- Reduced motion of the neck or shoulder
- Shoulder pain
- Tingling/numbness/weakness into the arms or fingers
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Ringing in the ears
- Memory problems
- Disturbed sleep
- Depressions
COMMON CAUSES OF WHIPLASH
Whiplash symptoms are caused by the movement of the head and neck, particularly in the upper part of the neck, damaging the joints, nerves and muscles. This movement causes your muscles to overstretch, leading to tears. It also adds excessive pressure on your nerves and compresses your bones and joint, which could lead to fractures.
When you visit a whiplash injury specialist promptly, depending on the severity, you can get advice on apt interventions and possible outcomes. However, if the joints and nerves are not addressed and corrected, this can result in chronic problems.
Most of the time, the injury causes a misalignment of the bones at the top of the neck (C1 and C2), known as a Subluxation. This misalignment will put the surrounding muscles, joints and nerves out of balance.
If these parts are out of balance, it can affect how well they function. Due to the location, this will negatively affect the messages passing between the brain and body via the nerves. This is how whiplash injury can start to affect mood and cause symptoms in other body parts, such as fatigue and sleep problems.
While whiplash is a result of physical injury, there are some recognised triggers that could worsen your condition:
- Stress – Stress plays a big factor in triggering the symptoms of whiplash patients. When stressed, the brain is working harder on mental and emotional tasks. With this reduced capacity, there is less focus on maintaining the body in its healthy balance, including healing the parts of the neck and maintaining proper nerve function.
- Head Movements – When moving the head quickly, it will stress the already damaged joints, muscles and nerves. This will prolong the recovery.
- Lack of sleep – If the body doesn’t get adequate rest, the body will not be able to heal itself efficiently.
WHEN TO VISIT A CHIROPRACTOR FOR WHIPLASH
Generally, it’s recommended to seek chiropractic care soon after the injury occurs, preferably within a few days. Early intervention can help prevent the development of chronic pain and promote better pain management. Visiting a chiropractor for whiplash right away allows the specialist to know the severity of your condition and determine the appropriate approach to manage your symptoms. Additionally, you can also turn to chiropractic care as an alternative method for managing your whiplash symptoms.

HOW IS WHIPLASH DIAGNOSED?
To fully understand the nature of your injury, the specialist will run a comprehensive evaluation of your whiplash symptoms, including physical examination and imaging. The physical examination will focus on your neck, spine, and associated areas. It includes a range of motion tests, orthopaedic examinations, strength tests and reflexes. For imaging, this may be through an X-ray, CT scan or MRI, depending on the case. Typically, an X-ray will be the first test ordered to exclude a fracture, and it should be taken for all cases of whiplash. An MRI may be ordered for more complex cases or where there is a worry of spinal cord or cervical disc damage. On the other hand, you may undergo a CT scan should your injury show possible signs of bone damage.
WHIPLASH CHIROPRACTIC
Common approaches to managing whiplash pain include painkillers (such as Panadol and Ibuprofen), massage, injections, ultrasound and even surgery in rare cases. However, if underlying damage to your C1 and C2 isn’t dealt with, the problems may persist or sometimes even resurface years after. Unfortunately, most of these therapies are short-term or, in some cases, may not work. If the pressure remains on the sympathetic and cranial nerves due to the Atlanto Occipital Subluxation, your whiplash symptoms will return. You may also consider rehabilitation as another alternative to manage the symptoms.
Upper Cervical care has a long history of achieving success with whiplash injuries due to its focus on the problems at C1 and C2. Once the Subluxation (misalignment) is corrected at these bones (caused by the whiplash injury itself), the muscles, ligaments and other joints can heal properly. Furthermore, it can help to address secondary symptoms as well. One way to address this concern is by consulting with a chiropractor. Generally, chiropractors focus on the nervous system. However, there are upper cervical-specific chiropractors who specialise in the bones at the top part area of your neck, known as the Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2). In turn, this will also help your Atlanto Occipital Articulation, which is the joint between your cervical spine and the base of your skill.
Gradually, you may prevent further aggravation of your condition with the support of upper cervical care from a whiplash injury specialist, particularly dizziness, vertigo and fullness of the ear. Typically, you may notice improvements in hearing and tinnitus, more so beyond 6 weeks.
FOLLOW-UP STEPS
You should follow up with your whiplash chiropractor for further evaluation and monitoring of your condition. The duration required for whiplash pain management in Singapore can vary depending on the severity of the injury and your response to care. Usually, it might take from a few weeks to a couple of months to manage minor whiplash cases, while more severe cases could require a longer care period extending over several months. During this period, the chiropractor will assess your progress, modify the care plan if needed, and address any concerns or new symptoms that may arise. Make sure that you stay consistent with your care plan and be on time for your sessions to manage your symptoms.
Adequate rest is essential for healing. Follow your whiplash injury specialist’s guidance regarding activity restrictions and modifications. Engage in self-care practices, such as applying ice or heat to the affected area, practising good posture, and avoiding activities that exacerbate pain or discomfort.
In due time, you may also be advised to adjust your lifestyle to avoid further aggravation or repeated incidents of injury. As such, it’s important that you adhere to them. These may include maintaining a healthy diet to support tissue repair, managing stress levels, and avoiding behaviours or activities that strain the neck and spine.
Make sure to stay in touch with your whiplash injury specialist throughout the process. Report any changes in symptoms, limitations, or concerns promptly to your specialist. They can provide guidance and adjust the care plan accordingly.
RISKS OF NOT GETTING HELP FOR WHIPLASH
Choosing not to seek or delay getting help for your whiplash can lead to various risks and potential complications. Some of the risks associated with not getting the proper care for your whiplash include:
- Chronic Pain: When you delay consulting a specialist for your whiplash injury, it may lead to prolonged neck pain, stiffness, and discomfort.
- Restricted Range of Motion: Neglecting treatment may lead to decreased flexibility and limited range of motion in the neck, which can impact daily activities and overall quality of life.
- Secondary Symptoms: Whiplash injuries left untreated may contribute to the development of secondary symptoms, such as headaches, migraines, dizziness, vertigo, and shoulder or back pain.
- Psychological Impact: Persistent pain and functional limitations can affect mental health, leading to increased stress, anxiety, depression, and decreased overall well-being.
- Functional Impairments: Whiplash can interfere with work, hobbies, and daily activities due to ongoing pain, restricted movement, and other associated symptoms.
- Delayed Recovery: Without appropriate intervention, the body’s progress towards improved condition could be slowed down.
PREVENTIVE ACTIONS AGAINST WHIPLASH
While it’s challenging to prevent whiplash injuries completely, some preventive actions can minimise the risk or reduce the severity of an injury. Here are some preventive measures our whiplash specialists recommend:
- Always wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a vehicle and ensure it is properly positioned.
- Ensure that the headrest in your vehicle is positioned correctly to support the head and neck and minimise excessive movement during an impact.
- Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front to allow for sufficient reaction time and minimise the chances of a rear-end collision.
- When driving, observe traffic rules and avoid being distracted. Make sure to follow speed limits to reduce the risk of being involved in accidents that can cause whiplash.
- Maintain good posture while sitting, especially when working or driving for extended periods. Sit with your back supported and avoid slouching to reduce strain on the neck and spine.
- Incorporate exercises that target the muscles supporting the neck and upper back into your fitness routine. Strong muscles can provide better stability and protection against whiplash injuries.
- Regular physical activity and maintaining overall fitness can improve muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination, which may help prevent or minimise the impact of whiplash injuries.
- Stay vigilant while engaging in activities such as sports or recreational activities that may carry a risk of sudden impacts or collisions. Be mindful of your surroundings and take appropriate precautions to reduce the risk of injury.
